Interior-Point Method for Nuclear Norm Approximation with Application to System Identification

چکیده
The nuclear norm (sum of singular values) of a matrix is often used in convex heuristics for rank minimization problems in control, signal processing, and statistics. Such heuristics can be viewed as extensions of l1-norm minimization techniques for cardinality minimization and sparse signal estimation. In this paper we consider the problem of minimizing the nuclear norm of an affine matrix valued function. This problem can be formulated as a semidefinite program, but the reformulation requires large auxiliary matrix variables, and is expensive to solve by generalpurpose interior-point solvers. We show that problem structure in the semidefinite programming formulation can be exploited to develop more efficient implementations of interior-point methods. In the fast implementation, the cost per iteration is reduced to a quartic function of the problem dimensions, and is comparable to the cost of solving the approximation problem in Frobenius norm. In the second part of the paper, the nuclear norm approximation algorithm is applied to system identification. A variant of a simple subspace algorithm is presented, in which low-rank matrix approximations are computed via nuclear norm minimization instead of the singular value decomposition. This has the important advantage of preserving linear matrix structure in the low-rank approximation. The method is shown to perform well on publicly available benchmark data.

ABS Solution of equations of second kind and application to the primal-dual interior point method for linear programming
Abstract We consider an application of the ABS procedure to the linear systems arising from the primal-dual interior point methods where Newton method is used to compute path to the solution. When approaching the solution the linear system, which has the form of normal equations of the second kind, becomes more and more ill conditioned. We show how the use of the Huang algorithm in the ABS cl...
متن کاملCorrector-predictor arc-search interior-point algorithm for $P_*(kappa)$-LCP acting in a wide neighborhood of the central path
In this paper, we propose an arc-search corrector-predictor interior-point method for solving $P_*(kappa)$-linear complementarity problems. The proposed algorithm searches the optimizers along an ellipse that is an approximation of the central path. The algorithm generates a sequence of iterates in the wide neighborhood of central path introduced by Ai and Zhang. The algorithm does not de...
متن کامل(S1/2) regularization methods and fixed point algorithms for affine rank minimization problems
The affine rank minimization problem is to minimize the rank of a matrix under linear constraints. It has many applications in various areas such as statistics, control, system identification and machine learning. Unlike the literatures which use the nuclear norm or the general Schatten q (0 < q < 1) quasi-norm to approximate the rank of a matrix, in this paper we use the Schatten 1/2 quasi-nor...
متن کاملGeneralized System Identification with Stable Spline Kernels
Regularized least-squares approaches have been successfully applied to linear system identification. Recent approaches use quadratic penalty terms on the unknown impulse response defined by stable spline kernels, which control model space complexity by leveraging regularity and bounded-input bounded-output stability. This paper extends linear system identification to a wide class of nonsmooth s...
متن کاملNuclear norm system identification with missing inputs and outputs
We present a system identification method for problems with partially missing inputs and outputs. The method is based on a subspace formulation and uses the nuclear norm heuristic for structured low-rank matrix approximation, with the missing input and output values as the optimization variables. We also present a fast implementation of the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) to ...
